Invitation to Workshop: The Role of the Muslima in Public Discourse |
The Muslim woman has been serving the Eurocentric perspective for centuries as a projection field of both, morally negative rejection as well as mythical conceptions of their femininity. This historical legacy continues to have effect until today. It doesn’t only influence the perception of Muslim women in European societies but even more the process of their self-definition. Although recent public discourses on Islam focus mainly upon Muslim women, surprisingly few concerned themselves taking part in the discussion. The problem is obviously not a shortage of appropriate platforms. There is rather a lack of many women’s necessary self-consciousness to self-define themselves and so their community in a positive way.
The workshop is aimed at Muslim women who still have little or no expe-rience in dealing with the public. Nagwan El Ashwal is working in different projects. She is inter alia a project manager at Media & Religion, Religioscope Institute and studiyng for her PHD at the University of Cairo.
